The South African Air Force (SAAF) is inviting applications for its Military Skills Development System (MSDS) Training Programme for the 2026 intake. This initiative provides young South Africans with an opportunity to serve in uniform on a two-year contract, gaining essential military and functional training.
During the first year, recruits will undergo military training along with specialized functional training relevant to their roles. The second year will see participants deployed where their skills are needed, allowing them to apply their knowledge and gain practical experience.
Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the MSDS Training Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Must be a South African citizen (no dual citizenship).
• Age requirements:
• 18 – 22 years old with Grade 12, having passed Mathematics, Physical Science, and English at Level 4.
• 18 – 26 years old if holding a minimum of a three-year tertiary qualification or an N6 certificate.
• A clean criminal record (no past convictions or pending cases).
• Must meet the medical fitness standards for enlistment.
• No visible tattoos on the legs, lower arms, neck, or face.
Special Requirements for Pilots & Navigators
Candidates aspiring to become pilots or navigators must meet additional specific requirements:
• Must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of 24 or higher, excluding Life Orientation.
• Individuals with a Commercial Pilot’s License (CPL) must be 24 years old or younger at the time of reporting.
• Must have completed Grade 12 with at least Level 4 in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English.
• No hearing impairments or reliance on hearing aids.
• Perfect 6/6 vision is required—no corrective lenses, contact lenses, or history of eye surgery.
Physical Measurement Criteria for Pilots & Navigators
• Height: Minimum 160 cm, Maximum 190 cm
• Weight: Minimum 53 kg, Maximum 102 kg
