Purpose of the Role

The General Worker will be responsible for performing routine manual tasks that contribute to the effective and safe functioning of the container yard and surrounding areas. This includes cleaning, inspections, maintenance duties, and assisting with basic operational functions as required.
You will ensure the yard is neat, safe, and compliant with company standards as per Bidvest’s Quality Work Instructions (QWI).

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric Certificate

• Must have completed relevant safety training

• Certification in basic health and safety or MHE operation (advantageous)

Experience Required

• Minimum 2 years of experience as a General Worker in a warehousing or container yard environment

• Proven understanding of basic safety procedures in industrial settings

• Exposure to working around machinery and handling routine equipment checks

• Experience operating ride-on cleaning equipment (preferred)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Yard Maintenance & Cleaning
• Daily cleaning of the container yard, wash bay, and surrounding areas using a ride-on sweeper

• Maintain a clean and orderly environment by following the daily yard maintenance schedule

• Inspect cleaning machinery and ensure the ride-on scrubber is in proper working condition

• Report any damage, safety concerns, or non-standard conditions to the supervisor promptly

Inspections & Compliance
• Conduct daily inspections of container stacks to ensure they are securely and safely positioned

• Monitor and report irregularities during checks

• Maintain records of maintenance activities, inspections, and machinery use

• Comply with all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards at all times

Operational Support
• Assist with general yard operations including loading/unloading assistance when needed

• Occasionally operate Material Handling Equipment (MHE) if certified and required (ad hoc, less than five times annually)

• Support internal operations through general manual labour and logistical support as assigned by supervisors
