Job Purpose


The primary role of the Trainee Shed Assistant is to support the Shedman in shunting and moving locomotives within a designated area. This ensures efficient locomotive operations while maintaining safety and compliance standards.


Key Responsibilities


โ€ข Maintain a clean and safe fuelling and locomotive area to facilitate smooth shunting operations.
โ€ข Assist in the preparation, assignment, and delivery of locomotives to train operators and maintenance teams.
โ€ข Follow instructions from the Shedman to execute shunting operations in compliance with railway safety procedures.
โ€ข Use hand signals to help guide locomotive placement within the shed.


โ€ข Perform regular housekeeping duties to keep the workplace clean and organized.
โ€ข Conduct safety checks on locomotives, railway tracks, and overhead lines, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and company policies.
โ€ข Couple and uncouple locomotives by handling buffers, air brakes, and jumper cables.
โ€ข Monitor fuel levels and refill locomotives with diesel and sand as needed.
โ€ข Operate track switches to align locomotive movements and prevent derailments.
โ€ข Secure stationary locomotives by applying hand brakes and placing wheel scotches as per safety protocols.
โ€ข Test and inspect auxiliary locomotive equipment for operational efficiency.


Minimum Requirements


Education & Experience:
โ€ข Minimum Grade 10 or at least 6 years of experience in a railway operations environment.


Training & Certification:
โ€ข Candidates must be willing to complete theoretical and practical training to become certified Shed Assistants.


Health & Fitness Requirements:
โ€ข Candidates must undergo medical evaluations and safety behavior risk assessments during selection and annually thereafter.
โ€ข Must meet physical fitness standards, including hearing, vision, and mental alertness.


Required Skills & Knowledge


Knowledge of:
โ€ข Railway yard layouts and siding operations
โ€ข Shunting procedures and train working rules
โ€ข Locomotive types, brake systems, and integrated train plans
โ€ข Safety standards and railway legislation (Act 85/16 RSR, SANS 3004)
โ€ข Protective equipment policies and HC policies

โ€ข Effective communication (written and verbal)
โ€ข Good numerical skills
โ€ข Quick decision-making and problem-solving abilities
